Shin guards - types

Shin guards can be divided into three categories.

  1. Shin guards for typically stand-up sports - designed mainly for disciplines such as Muay Thai or kickboxing. They are relatively thick, and this is because their main task is to protect the shin from the consequences of very strong punches and kicks, which are the norm in Muay Thai. This type of shin guards are chosen by both beginners and advanced players. The hallmark of stand-up fighting pads is legendary durability and above-average quality. They leave the player a lot of freedom and provide mobility.
  2. Shin guards for MMA – they differ slightly in construction from typical stand-up protectors. Versions intended for MMA take into account the specificity of mixed martial arts. Part of the duel here takes place on the ground floor, so the shin guard may have a thinner construction (there are fewer kicks here than in Thai boxing). The design allows you to move on the ground floor and put on a lever. The fastening is usually a flexible, neoprene sock that does not move and provides a high sense of comfort. If you train Muay Thai or kickboxing, choose thicker stand-up pads.
  3. Lightweight leg guards for beginners – they are extremely practical and flexible. They are the basic equipment of fresh adepts of martial arts. They work well during typical technical training, but due to the thin design, they will not be a good choice for heavier sparring.

Please note that most of the range in this category are foot and shin guards in one. There are a small number of products on the market designed to protect the shin only. The reason for this state of affairs is very simple. The ankle joint should also be properly protected against injury.

Shin guards protectors - price

Shin guards for kickboxing, Muay Thai and MMA are products with an excellent price-performance ratio. The cheapest calf protectors cost only 12 euro. More advanced equipment, made of multi-layer EVA foam with different density, costs less than 50 euro.
